![]() Like liquid sugar, Akudama Drive doesn't really make for much more than a temporary sugar rush. the ending leaves the watcher hanging a little, especially given the previous developments of the show.įuture theme? Ayato from Tokyo Ghoul? Found family? Mad people? Gore? Fun? Sadness? All there.įor lack of a better simile, Akudama drive is like eating rock candy- at first seeming incredibly interesting, an interesting appearance with an enticing texture, it tastes sweet but isn't much more. In the end I wished I knew more about the characters as much as I wished that I knew what happens from the ending on - which is one of the only things that are frustrating about the show. If you allow yourself to get into it, then you'll be emotional, you'll be mad, you'll be wondering if everything's alright with your head and while that's not for everyone the animation, voice acting, characters and their designs alongside the story and the unique setting designs and ideas definitely do their job. If you're into bloody journey's, characters you'll like that you maybe shouldn't like (JJK, CSM, and the family are waving) then, once It's focus is mainly on the morals, the story, and not necessarily on telling a lot of background and the likes about most of the characters - just a trend since a while. It's another one of those that leaves one with the moral questioning and is not for the faint of heart at all. If you like animes such as Dororo, Babylon, Tokyo Ghoul, Hell's Paradise or even Chainsaw Man then this is definitely worth checking out. But, overall, Akudama Drives managed to deliver a good story in only 12 episodes and, keeping in mind the amount of main characters, the original setting, and the technical quality, it is quite impressive. ![]() The latest episodes are just much better. Have you seen the horse drawing meme? So Akudama Drive's story is the opposite of that meme. The OP is made for the crazy, action-packed first half but the second half gets more serious so after a certain episode the OP feels out of place. The animation is good despite noticeable cg, the Donganronpa art style looks great in motion, the ost is on point. one of the characters uses a portable EMP that somehow doesn't render electronics that is placed like 10 meters away inoperable, but plunges the entire district into darkness. Nevertheless, some discrepancies pop up throughout the cour e.g. I'm not gonna spoil the second half but it gives depth to the characters, improves the pacing, and answers every question I had. Granted, the first half is the weakest part, as I already mentioned it doesn't have good characters, it also overwhelms you with fast-paced storytelling and, simultaneously, dumps with exposition. The following episodes are packed with action, so none of them has got neither a proper introduction nor a character development until the second half. The first episode introduces seven main characters in total: five highly skilled characters, an ordinary citizen, and a hoodlum. The very first mission these characters are given is to rescue another Akudama ( a criminal in this world ). ![]() Akudama Drive, on the other hand, is condensed, has a proper world building, and uses its story to affect the viewers rather than just entertain them. But in case of Danganronpa after the strong premise there is the extremely drawn-out death game that consists of investigations and trials, and the cherry on top is the lousy world building and explanation of the plot holes, but more likely poking fun at the plot holes. episodes, that one may wonder if the anime has at least something original. ![]() And there are so many similarities in the first The premise of this show has much in common with Danganronpa: the futuristic future, post-apocalyptic Japan, and characters that are extremely skilled in a specific area. And for that reason I presume Akudame Drive didn't follow in Tokyo Ghoul's footsteps. From the very first episode it's obvious that the anime was inprired by Danganronpa but, in reality, the original creator of the show is the creator of Dangaronpa. ![]() Akudama Drive is an original anime from Studio Pierrot, which is notorious for butchering the Tokyo Ghoul adaptation, so it's fascinating that some people had hope for the show. ![]()
